Toxin-Free Chemistry – A Green Revolution in the Synthesis of Organophosphorus Compounds
Organic chemistry is rarely associated with environmental friendliness. It is usually perceived as toxic, foul-smelling, and involving hard-to-control reactions. However, Dr. Katarzyna Szwaczko from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin shows that organic synthesis processes can be conducted differently - simpler, safer, and in a more sustainable manner. The researcher, who has been working on the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds for nearly two decades, has developed an innovative methodology for obtaining these compounds using electrochemical methods and simple graphite electrodes. By employing electrochemistry instead of classical chemical reactions, she completely eliminates the need for toxic catalysts, organic solvents, and additives, leaving ordinary water as the sole reaction medium.
The innovativeness of the project lies in utilizing electrochemistry in a domain that, until now, was primarily the realm of traditional synthesis methods. For Dr. Szwaczko and her team, this represents a completely new approach born out of scientific curiosity. As part of the ongoing research, the developed technology marks a breakthrough in synthetic chemistry - processes run sustainably, with minimal energy consumption and waste reduction. This approach not only reduces the environmental footprint, but also paves the way for commercial applications. The resulting intermediates and precursors can find applications in the plastics, protective coatings, and agrochemical industries - as components of paints, varnishes, plant protection products, or additives that improve material properties, such as flame resistance.
"Our goal is to show that chemistry does not have to harm the environment - it can protect it if used wisely. Our methodology is based on simple, inexpensive, and eco-friendly solutions that can be successfully scaled from the laboratory to industrial production," emphasizes Dr. Katarzyna Szwaczko.
Dr. Katarzyna Szwaczko is a participant in the first edition of PRIME - a science commercialization support program implemented by the Foundation for Polish Science using funds from the European Funds for a Modern Economy (FENG) program. As part of the PRIME project, the researcher and her team - Wioletta Ostrowska (Knowledge and Technology Transfer Center Officer) and Jakub Nowak (Business Leader) - will develop competencies in the implementation and commercialization of their research.
